More Information

The Model A utilizes a mechanical brake system, meaning braking force is applied via a series of rods and levers rather than hydraulic fluid.

  • Role: The pins' primary function is to secure and pivot the front brake lever (sometimes called the brake arm or shaft lever) to the front end of the brake cross-shaft.

  • Action: The front brake lever is the point where the main brake rods from the cross shaft connect. When the driver steps on the brake pedal, the rods pull on this lever. The lever pivots, and the pins must hold it securely to the shaft so that the rotation of the lever can then actuate the brake wedge inside the drum assembly. This wedge, in turn, pushes the brake shoes outward against the drum, slowing the wheel.
